In a report released this week, analysts at DisplaySearch estimate that OLED displays will be the fastest growing material application in electronics over the next eight years but that we won’t get to see a large number of products with them until 2011.
That year, big OLED players such as Philips, GE, Konica Minolta, and OSRAM will finally ramp up production. If this does come to pass, they could give each other enough competition to the point where they won’t have to weigh down their OLEDs with ridiculous price premiums. But that’s a big ‘if.’

According to their estimates, some …

Emergency workers respond to two unusual suicides a thousand miles apart, in which young men took their lives by combining two easily purchased chemical products and sealing themselves in their cars. The cases are the first to copy a deadly Japanese fad that killed hundreds last year, and injured scores of innocent bystanders.

In 2008, the Flip Mino camcorder took a firm hold of the mini portable camcorder market and made a nice, plumpy $100 million profit. Toshiba’s newest minicam, the Camileo S10, may not turn out to be that successful (it’s easier when you build a new cheapie market all to yourself), but it appears to be a worthy competitor.
This year, several different companies are attempting to challenge the Flip’s nice run with clones focusing on different aspects of the portable phenomenon, either with distinct design differences, or key spec upgrades. The Camileo S10, released this month in Europe and Asia, follows …

Make a 3D Stereo Camera

Summary:

We’re pretty used to amazing special effects — even the phone in your pocket can likely produce some pretty fancy 3D graphics. But despite this, there is a rather surprising feeling of childlike wonder whenever we view real 3D images. For many of us, the first experience was with the Viewmaster, a plastic toy which contained a disk of tiny photographic slides.
{{#shtml:Template:Video3DCamera}}
These would present two slightly different views of the same scene, taken a few inches apart, approximately the distance between our eyes. Because these images are presented separately to each eye, a 3D effect is produced.
And that’s exactly …

Orbital debris has become acknowledged as a major threat to present and future NASA missions, but little data has been publicly released about the history of space junk’s impact on previous missions.

Being hit by tiny chips of paint, aluminum, steel, and other types of space garbage is a regular part of Shuttle missions, according to data maintained by Johnson Space Center’s Hypervelocity Impact Technology Facility. In 54 missions from STS-50 through STS-114, space junk and meteoroids hit the Shuttle’s windows 1,634 times necessitating 92 window replacements. In addition, the Shuttle’s radiator was hit 317 times, actually causing holes in …

As Apple gets ready to preview its new software developers’ kit and an updated iPhone operating system next week, there could be some changes to the company’s App Store too.
We’re hearing rumors that Apple could introduce a "premium" section in the store, in order to sell more expensive third-party programs. The premium section would largely be focused on games, giving game makers a channel to offer more in-depth (and pricier) titles without getting lost in the clutter of free and $1 apps.
Game makers contacted by Wired.com, including Activision and Electronic Arts, have not returned calls for a comment. Apple …
